Christmas is fast approaching and what better way to get into the spirit than enjoying festive food, live entertainment and supporting small and independent businesses.
Throughout November and December, Love Basingstoke presents a fantastic programme of free family fun, festive window displays and Christmas markets.
On Sunday 21 November, join Top of the Town businesses as the area gets a Christmas makeover with lights and festive window displays and Scratchbuilt Productions presents The Guardians of Basingstoke – a stunning light installation in Market Square.
The monthly Borough Basket Street Market returns on Friday 26 November, with over 20 stalls selling local produce and gifts. And join Carol and Belle with their beautiful hostess trolley playing everyone’s favourite festive tunes as part of SWANK’s Christmas Party.
On Saturday 27 November, treat your loved ones this Christmas with gifts from the Crafters Christmas Market in Cross Street while taking in Angie Mack’s festive hooping display and performances from choirs.
Enjoy festive window displays while showing your support for small and independent businesses at the Top of the Town on Small Business Saturday (4 December). Activities on offer on the day also include mini wreath making workshops with Suzie Brown, family fun with Junk Jodie and carols from Basingstoke Gang Show at 2.30pm and 4pm.
On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 December, the Borough Basket Street Market takes place with a Christmas twist from 11am to 7.30pm and Victorian carol singers will get shoppers into the spirit with traditional classics such as O, Christmas Tree, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald. Lighting up Market Square, a giant digital storybook displaying the festive classic The Night Before Christmas, narrated by Stephen Fry, is available between 4.30pm and 8.30pm on both days.
From Saturday 11 December, enjoy twelve days of spectacular Christmas projections which will light up the Willis Museum building after dark, with showings every 30 minutes. And on Saturday 18 December join Hugh Fern and Lee Whittingstall for some foodie fun on the move in their mobile, musical Christmas kitchen.
The programme of activities is supported by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the government’s Welcome Back Fund, Arts Council England, Without Walls and Hampshire Cultural Trust.
In addition to the bumper programme of festivities in the Top of the Town, continue your shopping at The Malls where you can browse stalls at the Christmas Market, enjoy a Victorian Christmas and send your letter to the North Pole.
At Festival Place hundreds of poinsettias and intricate light displays will create the perfect festive backdrop, with a stunning poinsettia Christmas tree taking pride of place in St John’s Square. You can also join a host of colourful Christmas characters who will roam the centre and deliver sleigh-loads of fun, from theatre and dance to music and storytelling. Mrs Christmas will also be on hand to sprinkle a little magic around the centre and Santa will be in the traditional grotto where you can dress up for the perfect festive photo.
Cabinet Member for Communities, Planning and Infrastructure Cllr Simon Bound said: “Christmas is such a magical time of the year and we are delighted to present a fantastic range of free activities and entertainment for people of all ages in the Top of the Town throughout the festive period.
“There really is something for everyone. From arts and crafts, stunning light displays, festive performances and a fantastic range of small businesses to support when shopping for your loved ones, there is plenty to get you in the festive spirit.”
