More electric chargers support greener travel in the borough

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is supporting more residents and visitors across the borough to opt for electric vehicles with the installation of three chargers in Whitchurch.
Two fast chargers will be installed in Bell Street car park and another will be available at the Gill Nethercott car park in the rural town later this spring. Fast chargers can charge from empty to 100% in two to five hours, depending on car and battery capacity.
The borough council has received Government funding of £22,500 for the installation of the EV chargers in Whitchurch with additional support of £11,500 from developer contributions.
This green travel initiative follows the opening of the electric charging hub In Feather’s Yard, Basingstoke, last November. Offering seven charging points, it was the first of its kind in Hampshire and supports the council’s Climate Emergency target to work towards a carbon neutral borough by 2030, as well as helping to deliver the adopted Transport Strategy.
Since opening, the town centre hub has proved popular - in use every day of the week and offering motorists free and convenient parking while their electric vehicles are charging.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “We welcome the introduction of three fast electric vehicle chargers in Whitchurch. This will offer electric vehicle drivers more convenience as they travel around the borough or if they live locally with the option to recharge their vehicles there.
“This further demonstrates the borough council’s commitment to providing motorists with better facilities to support environmentally friendly travel, while moving towards our Climate Emergency targets.
“Reducing carbon emissions in the borough is a key part of this aim. Giving more choice, convenience and free parking to electric vehicle drivers will encourage more motorists to consider using electric vehicles in the future.”
